California State Railroad Museum is easily one of the finest railroad museums in the United States. It fittingly preserves and presents the evolution of railways and how railroads have changed the lives of multiple generations of Americans before it became one of the major modes of transportation instead of the only de facto choice. There are nineteen steam locomotives, well preserved and some restored. The iron horse locomotives are an amazing treat for anyone, regardless of their interest in the history of the railroads. There are cars you can hop onto and walk through, encounter the period china in dining cars, the finery in sleeping cars and there is a wooden caboose too. Everything from the railway post office to the train rides during summer at the California State Railroad Museum is immersive for people of all ages.

About California State Railroad Museum

California State Railroad Museum is located at 125 I Street in Sacramento, California and is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission for adults is $12, kids aged six to seventeen pay $6 and children aged younger than five get free admission. There are short term and long term parking spaces in Old Sacramento, on the streets from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. if you would park for an hour or so and in two garages, namely Old Sacramento Garage and Tower Bridge Garage, if you have to park for all day or several hours.

There is a mix of current, permanent and changing exhibits at the museum. Perhaps the singular highlight is the train ride. You can embark on a forty-five minutes train ride along the Sacramento River. The Tuesday train rides through summer are the most popular and quite unforgettable. The summer excursion train ride offers you a choice of open-air gondolas, closed coach cars and you may check into an observation car with first class facilities. There is also a Farm-to-Fork Cocktail Train, Spookomotive 2000 X 1333 and Polar Express for you to choose from. Every detail you need about the museum, the exact timings and available rides at the time of your holiday can be found on the official website.
